Is Rohit Sharma Losing Faith in His Mental Game?

Rohit Sharma, one of India’s most celebrated cricketers, is currently facing a significant slump in his Test career. Former India stumper Dinesh Karthik believes that the Indian captain's struggles are more mental than technical.

What’s Troubling Rohit?

On Day 4 of the Brisbane Test against Australia, Rohit was dismissed for 10 runs off 27 balls. This continued his dismal form in Test cricket, which has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike.

Dinesh Karthik’s Insight

During a Cricbuzz discussion, Karthik shared his thoughts on Rohit’s issues. He emphasized that Rohit’s technique, honed over a decade and a half of international cricket, is solid. However, the mental aspect is where he is faltering.

A Mental Battle

“Rohit Sharma has played a decade and a half of international cricket. If you are telling me, his technique is not watertight, I would be very surprised. Like everybody else, he's got areas that he is vulnerable in, but he has the mental ability to fight it out. I am not sure he believes in it right now. That could be confidence. But, if he puts his mind to it, works on areas that he wants to really address as to how he wants to play, this question can be answered,” Karthik said.

A Different Approach Needed

Karthik also pointed out that Rohit’s usual aggressive style, which has worked wonders in white-ball cricket, is not suitable for the Test format. He urged Rohit to adopt a more patient and cautious approach.

“For some time now, he's attacked himself out of pressure. That's what India wanted in white-ball cricket. He was the pioneer for it. As leader, he showed how it should be done. It's time for him to show the other way round. Guts it out, make sure that he is there. Avoid shots that he knows will be dangerous on that pitch and back his technique,” Karthik advised.

Recent Performance

Rohit’s last hundred in Test cricket came against England in March. Since then, he has only managed one fifty in his last 13 Test innings. His scores in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) have been a concerning 3, 6, and 10.

Team Effort

Despite Rohit’s struggles, India managed to avoid the follow-on thanks to KL Rahul (84) and Ravindra Jadeja (77), along with a crucial last-wicket stand between Akash Deep (27*) and Jasprit Bumrah (10*).

Conclusion

Rohit Sharma’s mental fortitude is being put to the test. With the support and advice from experienced cricketers like Dinesh Karthik, there is hope that he can regain his form. The upcoming matches will be crucial in determining whether Rohit can fight his way back to his best.
